Chunk tasks
Break assignments into small parts with a check-in after each one.
How to do it
- Divide the assignment into small sections (cover part of the page, fold it, or cut it into strips).
- Give the student one chunk at a time, or have them check off each part.
- Check in and give feedback after each chunk.
- Offer a brief break or preferred activity after a set number of chunks if needed.
- Gradually make the chunks bigger as the student succeeds.
Why it works
- Big tasks feel overwhelming and trigger avoidance
- Frequent completion builds momentum
- Creates natural points for feedback and praise
When to use it
- With students who don’t start or finish work
- For long or multi-step assignments
- With students who shut down or get frustrated
Tips and pitfalls
- Start with a chunk the student can finish easily.
- Check whether the work is at the right level. Chunking can’t fix work that’s too hard.
