Tier 1 · Universal

Calm, private redirection

Correct behavior briefly, privately, and neutrally, then move on.

Setup: No prep Who: Any adult

How to do it

  1. Approach the student calmly and at their level, slightly to the side.
  2. Use a quiet voice and state the expected behavior: “I need you to start problem one.”
  3. Avoid questions like “Why are you doing that?” and don’t argue. Repeat the direction once if needed.
  4. Give the student time and space to comply. Walk away.
  5. Acknowledge compliance quietly: “Thanks. That’s it.”
  6. If behavior continues, follow your planned consequence calmly.

Why it works

  • Public correction invites an audience and escalation
  • Brief redirection keeps teaching time
  • A calm adult helps a student stay calm

When to use it

  • Any minor to moderate misbehavior
  • With students who argue or escalate when corrected
  • When a student is starting to get upset

Tips and pitfalls

  • Use the student’s name and the fewest words possible.
  • Watch your body language: relaxed hands, no pointing, neutral face.
  • If the student argues, don’t respond to the content. Restate the expectation or come back later.
