Organization routines
Teach a simple system for materials and assignments, and check it regularly.
How to do it
- Pick one simple system (for example, a single binder with a “to do” and “done” pocket).
- Model how to use it and have students practice.
- Build in a daily 2-minute clean-out and planner check at the end of class.
- Use an assignment tracker for students who need more help.
- Do a weekly binder or backpack check and praise progress.
Why it works
- Many students have never been shown how to organize
- Reduces lost work and time spent searching
- Builds independence and executive function
When to use it
- At the start of the year for everyone
- With students who lose work or come unprepared
- Before long projects
Tips and pitfalls
- Simpler systems get used. Fewer folders and pockets is better.
- Color-code by subject for younger students.
