Tier 2 · Targeted
Adult mentor
Pair the student with a caring adult who meets regularly to connect, encourage, and problem-solve.
How to do it
- Match the student with a willing adult, ideally not the teacher having the most conflict with them.
- Meet at least weekly for 15–30 minutes, with brief daily hellos if possible.
- Start by getting to know the student; use the interest inventory.
- Set one small goal together and check on it each meeting.
- Keep a brief log and share wins with the student’s teachers and family.
Why it works
- A strong adult connection is protective for at-risk students
- Mentors notice problems early
- Increases motivation and attendance
When to use it
- Students who are disconnected, unmotivated, or often absent
- Students with few positive relationships at school
- As part of a broader plan
Tips and pitfalls
- Consistency matters more than length. Don’t miss meetings.
- Mentors aren’t disciplinarians. Keep the relationship positive.
